Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory

Located in Dongguan, one of the main cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory (SLAB) started construction on December 22, 2017 and completed registration in April, 2018. As one of the first Guangdong provincial laboratories, SLAB consists of four core sections: the Frontier Research Center, the Public Technology Platform and Large-scale Scientific Facilities, the Model Factory for Innovation, and the South Bay Interdisciplinary Science Center. It is expected to become an internationally recognized southern base for new materials research and development, an important component of China's materials research, and a new window of interdisciplinary cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Frontier Research Center

The Frontier Research Center focuses on major challenges of basic research, and major national plans and tasks in materials science and related fields, covering multiple research areas such as structural materials, function materials, and new concept materials, etc., and carries out comprehensive, long-term, technically difficult interdisciplinary research in the frontier of materials science.

Public Technology Platform and Large-scale Scientific Facilities

With a view to build a world-class materials research base equipped with state-of-the-art research tools, the Public Technology Platform focuses on the construction of the Neutron Science Platform, the Materials Preparation and Characterization Platform, the Micro-fabrication and Devices Platform, the Materials Computation and Database Platform, and other sub-platforms. It aims to independently build large-scale scientific facilities that could “intelligently manufacture materials,” in order to provide sustained, professional, advanced scientific and technical support and train future talents for the nation’s materials research and key technological breakthroughs.

Model Factory for Innovation

The Model Factory for Innovation is committed to industrial technology research and industrial transformation, serving as a powerful engine for the rapid transfer and transformation of the scientific and technological achievements made at SLAB. By the end of 2019, the Factory has introduced a total of 18 high quality project teams from well-known universities and research institutes at home and abroad. By incubating achievements made at SLAB in small and medium trials, and combining with social capital at the right time, the Factory has cultivated a group of high-tech companies with great development potentials in the field of new materials.

South Bay Interdisciplinary Science Center

Hosted by SLAB, and in partnership with universities from home and abroad, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the South Bay Interdisciplinary Science Center is engaged in academic exchanges and cooperation across the materials field and other research fields. Aiming to build a high-level, long-term and stable platform for academic exchanges and cooperative research with international influence, it will provide innovative ideas and sources of achievements for interdisciplinary sciences.
