Dong Guan

Registered in April 2018, the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory (SLAB) is located in Dongguan City, one of the main cities in the bay area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, and adjacent to the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The Lab will see the construction of a synergetic extreme condition scientific facility for materials preparation and fabrication, three core research centers (the fundamental and frontier research center, the support system, and the model factory for China’s future innovation), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Center for Interdisciplinary Science (GHMCIS), and a commercialization center. Thus, a whole chain of research will be established from fundamental and frontier research → applied basic research → industrial technology research → industrial transformation.

The Laboratory will be built by the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in partnership with Dongguan government and the Neutron Center. With an initial investment of RMB 5 billion yuan and a planned area of 800,000 square meters, the lab is expected to become a new platform for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao interdisciplinary cooperation, the base for new materials research and development in southern China with international influence, an integral part of future China’s matter science research, and a world-renowned research center.

The fundamental and frontier research center
Addressing major and fundamental scientific problems and national needs in the field of materials science, the Laboratory will undertake comprehensive, long-term and interdisciplinary frontier research in materials science. Its research areas will concentrate on fundamental materials aiming at international scientific frontiers, core materials aiming at strategic national needs, and key materials aiming at Guangdong industrial upgrading. A complete and innovative chain will be established from basic scientific discoveries, to breakthroughs in key technologies, and to the initial period of industrial applications, in order to produce major and original breakthroughs in materials research and achieve science commercialization.
Preferred fields research:
Structural Materials
Superconductivity
Magnetic materials and applications
Quantum materials and devices
Low-dimensional systems and physics
Flexible electronic materials and biomedical materials

The support system
Aiming to build a world-class research base for materials science, and in line with the spirit of cooperation, sharing and openness, the Laboratory will set up the following research platforms, namely, neutron science, materials preparation and characterization, micro processing and devices, and materials calculation and database. This support system will provide stable and advanced scientific and technological support for research in major fields of materials science and innovation in key technologies of SLAB and China.
Preferred fields research:
Material growth: CVD, PLD, MOCVD, MBE, etc.
Ultra-resolution microscopy: TEM, STEM, SNOM, Q-Plus AFM, etc.
Spectroscopy: ultrafast spectroscopy, ARPES, electronic spectroscopy (LT/HF transport), PPMS, SQUID, Rutherford back scattering, SIMS-ESR/NMR, etc.
Micro- nanofabrication: processing technologies, thin film deposition, advanced lithography, etching, etc.
Neutron Scattering: inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering.
Computation and simulation

The model factory for China’s future innovation
The model factory will be committed to industrial technology research and industrial transformation. It will serve as a powerful engine for the rapid transfer and transformation of the scientific and technological achievements made by the Laboratory. By incubating these achievements in small and medium trials in the model factory, and combining with social capital, the model factory will cultivate a group of high-tech companies with great development potentials in the field of new materials.

Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Center for Interdisciplinary Science (GHMCIS)
The center will be jointly developed by Peking University, Tsinghua University, the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Macau, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council. Its research areas will involve multiple disciplines such as physics, bioscience, energy, and manufacturing, etc. It is expected to attract top international scientists and active young scientists to visit and conduct cooperative research. The center will also organize a series of international conferences and seminars on a regular basis to provide a high-level, long-term and stable platform for academic exchanges and international collaboration.

Commercialization center
Relying on the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and relevant institutions and enterprises in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, the Laboratory will set up a commercialization center for transformation of scientific and technological achievements. It will implement the intellectual property management system to cultivate high value intellectual property, and strengthen its protection. With an emphasis on intellectual property, the center will establish a market-oriented technology innovation system that integrates industry, studies and research, to speed up the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and drive the development of materials industry in nearby areas and even in China.
