Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory

Registered in April 2018, the Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory (SLAB) is located in Dongguan City, one of the main cities in the bay area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao, and adjacent to the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). The Lab is composed of four core blocks, namely, the frontier research center, the public technology platform & the large-scale scientific facility, the model factory for innovation, and the South Bay Interdisciplinary Science Center, and three management departments, that is, the support and service department, the achievements transfer and transformation department, and the scientific research development department. Thus, a whole chain of research is established from frontier and fundamental research → applied basic research → industrial technology research → industrial transformation.

Songshan Lake Materials Laboratory

The Lab is built by the Institute of Physics (IOP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in partnership with Dongguan government and the Institute of High Energy Physics, CAS. With an initial investment of RMB 5 billion yuan (a total investment of RMB 12 billion yuan) and a planned area of 800,000 square meters, the lab is expected to become the base for new materials research and development in southern China with international influence, an integral part of future China’s matter science research, and a new platform for Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao interdisciplinary cooperation.

By the end of 2018, SLAB has a total of 208 staff members and has published a series of influential papers in world-renowned academic journals. The frontier research center has approved four project proposals, and three more are about to be approved. The public technology platform has set up four sub-platforms respectively for neutron science, material preparation and characterization, micro fabrication and devices, and material computation and database. Some of the equipment has moved in. The model factory for innovation has introduced ten groups. The South Bay Interdisciplinary Science Center has held its inauguration ceremony and the first international forum. In addition, a company for assets management is about to be established.

The Frontier Research Center

Aiming to address China’s bottleneck problem related to the high demands for advanced materials in the fields of energy, national defense and military, life and health, advanced manufacturing, and aerospace, etc., the Center will carry out long-term, sustained, and multidisciplinary frontier and fundamental research in materials sciences. It is expected to produce original and major breakthroughs, master core industrial technologies, crack major scientific and technological problems in key areas, initiate or undertake important national plans and tasks, give full play to the role of basic research as the innovation source for science and technologies, and achieve science commercialization in materials-related fields.

The Frontier Research Center

The Public Technology Platform

The Platform will be built into a world-class public service platform for material preparation, fabrication, and characterization of structure and property. It will provide strong support for the frontier and applied research at SLAB, attract and train a group of high level engineering and technological talents to develop key technologies, and provide high level technological services and talents to enterprises, universities and research institutes in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao bay area.

  • Material growth: CVD, PLD, MOCVD, MBE, etc. 
  • Ultra-resolution microscopy: TEM, STEM, SNOM, Q-Plus AFM, etc.
  • Spectroscopy: ultrafast spectroscopy, ARPES, electronic spectroscopy (LT/HF transport), PPMS, SQUID, Rutherford back scattering, SIMS-ESR/NMR, etc.
  • Micro- nanofabrication: processing technologies, thin film deposition, advanced lithography, etching, etc.
  • Neutron Scattering: inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering.

The Model Factory for Innovation

The model factory will be committed to industrial technology research and industrial transformation. By incubating achievements made at SLAB in small and medium trials, and combining with social capital at the right time, the model factory will cultivate a group of high-tech companies with great development potentials in the field of new materials. In this way, it will serve as a powerful engine for the rapid transfer and transformation of the scientific and technological achievements made at SLAB. Meanwhile, it will pay close attention to the research and development problems in upstream and downstream enterprises in material industry chain to provide technological support to scientific enterprises.

The South Bay Interdisciplinary Science Center

The Center will partner with universities from home and abroad, the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, to attract top international scientists to visit and conduct cooperative research. It is expected to become a high-level, long-term and stable platform for academic exchanges and international collaboration. The Center will pay sustained attention to frontier sciences and the latest developments in related fields from both home and abroad, and maintain good and collaborative relations with governments, enterprises, universities and research institutes, so as to provide strategic advice for the development of SLAB and lead the development of disciplinary sciences of both China and the world.

Support and Service Department

The department consists of the low-temperature workshop, the machine processing workshop, and the material and electronic component warehouse. The department will fulfill the needs of hardware facilities and technology support of the public technology platform, the frontier research center, the model factory for innovation and the large scientific facility, to provide for the Lab essential scientific conditions such as low temperature, processing of precision mechanical parts and electronic components.

The Department will implement the intellectual property management system to cultivate high value intellectual property and strengthen its creation and protection.
