Study of the structure and dynamics of complex fluids and soft matters using the techniques of Synchrotron X-ray and Neutron scattering

Abstract. Scattering has been for more than a century an essential technique to characterize the structure of materials. With the recent advances in both synchrotron and neutron facilities and techniques, more and more work can be done for the studies of complex fluids. Complex fluids and soft matters usually have structures on length scales span from nanometer to micron and then fall to the so-called small-angle range. Both Small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS, respectively) techniques are widely used to achieve complementary information about microstructure and interactions of widely spanned soft materials, i.e. Polymer nanocomposites, DNA nanoclusters, and colloidal gels, etc. The high brightness of modern synchrotron and free-electron laser sources is also exploited in dynamic scattering experiments using the coherent part of the beam (X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, XPCS) giving unique access to certain time-length phase space.

Biographical sketch. Dr. Guo has got his Bachelor Master degree of Physics from Peking University in 2000 and 2003. And then he joined Prof. Robert L. Leheny’s group in Johns Hopkins University for his Ph.D from 2004 to 2010 in the filed of Synchrotron X-ray scattering, particularly X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, and rheology investigations of soft glassy materials and other complex fluids with slow dynamics. After that he went to University of California San Diego and began his study of the structure and dynamics of condensed matter systems, i.e. Polymer nanocomposites, DNA nanoclusters, Lipid Cubic Phases, Magnetoelectric heterostructures, exchange bias system, and oxide interface, etc., using the techniques of Synchrotron X-ray and Neutron scattering as Postdoctoral in Prof. Sunil K. Sinha’s group. And now Dr. Guo is working together with Prof. Yun Liu in University of Delaware and National Institute of Standards and Technology. The research field are self-assembly of colloidal nanoparticles, particularly with critical Casimir forces, investigations of the properties of fluids (both liquid and gas) under confinement (e.g. in porous media) using multiple techniques, especially rheology, Synchrotron X-ray, and Neutron scattering.
