Two-pathway interference measurements in quantum matters: from quantum transport to quantum chemistry

Yong P. Chen received his BSc and MSc degrees in mathematics from Xi’an Jiaotong University and MIT respectively, a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University where he did experimental research on 2D electrons with Nobel physics laureate Prof. Daniel Tsui. He also did a postdoc in cold atom physics at Rice University with Prof. Randy Hulet. He is now a Professor in both the Physics and Electrical Engineering departments, and Director of Purdue Quantum Center and Associate Director for Birck Nanotechnology Center at Purdue University, USA. He is also a principle investigator at WPI International Center - Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR) at Tohoku University, Japan, and a member of the Center for International Collaboration (IOPCIC) at Institute of Physics (IoP), Chinese Academy of Sciences. His lab works on quantum matter and devices involving both electronic and atomic systems such as graphene & 2D materials, topological insulators, and spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. He received an NSF CAREER Award, IBM Faculty Award, and DOD Young Investigator Award, and is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Double-slit or two-pathway interference is a well-known phenomenon and played important roles in quantum physics. In this talk, I will present some new “spins” and applications of two-pathway interference as a “phase sensitive” measurement probe for condensed matter systems ranging from electronic quantum materials to atomic quantum gases. I may discuss 2 sets of recent experiments from my lab under this theme: 1) quantum coherent transport in 3D topological insulators (TI) such as a unique half-integer Aharonov-Bohm effect, and in TI-based SQUIDs (superconducting quantum interference devices) to probe possible topological superconductivity; and 2) quantum transport and photo-association experiments on a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) demonstrating a new kind of atom interferomer in energy-momentum space (synthetic band structures), and a new approach for quantum coherent control of chemistry by preparing reactant atoms in spin superpositions.
