Novel Concepts for High-Intensity THz Sources and their Applications

New applications in nonlinear THz spectroscopy, THz control of matter, and THz-driven particle acceleration require extremely intense single- and multi-cycle THz pulses. However, the limitations of commonly used technologies such as optical rectification in ZnTe or LiNbO3 make it challenging to increase the THz energy and field strength further. I will discuss the limitations and show recently demonstrated concepts to circumvent them. A brief overview of the research infrastructure at University of Pecs and at the ELI-ALPS research institute will also be given.
Dr. Jozsef A. FULOP obtained his PhD degree in physics from University of Szeged, Hungary in 2003. He has been with the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Garching, Germany and the Ludwig Maximilians University, Munich, Germany, working on micromaser QED and OPCPA development, respectively. In 2007, he returned to Hungary, to the University of Pecs. Now he is leading the High-Field Terahertz Laboratory at University of Pecs, and the Terahertz Group at ELI-ALPS, Szeged, Hungary. His current research is on generation and application of extremely intense THz pulses.
