Multipole plasmonic metasurface and applications in deflection, hologram and 3D imaging

Abstract:

Metasurfaces are two-dimensional nanoanetnna arrays that can control the propagation of light with subwavelength resolution. Particularly, metallic plasmonic metasurfaces (PMs) feature ultrathin thickness, femtosecond optical switching capability, strong nonlinear response, and high sensitivity to their electromagnetic environment; properties that cannot be easily extended to diffraction-limited dielectric metasurfaces. However, the technological relevance of PMs at visible frequencies is questionable due to their limited transmission efficiency. The state-of-the-art efficiency of geometric PMs at visible frequencies is ≤10%. In this talk, a tunable, multipole geometric PM with polarization conversion transmission efficiency reaching 42.3% in visible will be presented. The efficiency is augmented by breaking the scattering symmetry simultaneously for two orthogonal polarizations. The proposed metasurface is versatile, easy to fabricate, and highly tolerant to fabrication error. The technological relevance of the PM will be highlighted by demonstrating applications in beam deflection, hologram, and 3D imaging with record efficiencies.

Jihua Zhang is a postdoctoral associate in the Institute of Optics at University of Rochester. He obtained BS degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2011, and dual PhD degrees from University of Paris-Saclay and Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2016. After that, he worked as a research associate in the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science for 6 months. His PhD research was focused on nonlinear integrated photonics. His current research projects are in plasmonic metasurfaces and femtosecond nanofabrication.
