Ultrafast laser-induced new phenomena in phase transition materials

Femtosecond laser excitation can induce novel states of matter that are otherwise inaccessible, enabling the exploration of new behaviors as well as the underlying strongly-coupled physics. In this talk, I will describe the basic ideas of driving materials far from equilibrium, and the methods to capture such ultrafast dynamics. I will then present how we have used time-resolved ARPES to uncover new phenomena in magnetic and charge density wave materials, such as the critical behavior within 20 fs that governs the ultrafast magnetic transition in Ni, the coherent electron-lattice modulation, mode-selective electron-phonon coupling and the resulting hidden phases in 1T-TaSe2.
