IOP Huairou Campus Went into Operation

Date:30-10-2020 Print

The Huairou Campus of the Institute of Physics (IOP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) started operation in Huairou District, Beijing, on October 30. An opening ceremony was held to mark this significant moment in the construction of the Beijing National Science and Innovation Center in Huairou Science City. The Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics, the CAS Center of Excellence in Condensed Matter Physics, and the Beijing Physics Science Instrument R&D Center were also unveiled on this new campus on the same day.

"One Facility and Two Centers" started trial operation

The IOP Huairou Campus is located in the core area of Huairou Science City, covering an area of 230 mu and a construction area of 118,000 square meters. In order to fully implement the national plan of constructing a national science and technology innovation center in Beijing, the Beijing government and CAS joined hands in the construction of the Huairou Science City. IOP started the construction of the Center for Materials Genome Initiative (CMGI) and the Center for Clean Energy (CCE) in May 2017 and the Synergetic Extreme Condition User Facility (SECUF) in September 2017 (One Facility and Two Centers). In 2017, they were the first projects in Huairou Science City to start construction, and in July 2020 they were the first to complete construction.

Prof. Fang Zhong, Director of IOP, said on the ceremony that, as the first batch of national large scientific facilities and frontier interdisciplinary centers launched by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Beijing government, "One Facility and Two Centers" have an important mission of achieving leapfrog development in materials science at the Beijing National Science and Innovation Center in Huairou, Beijing.

The Center for Clean Energy focuses on the research into secondary batteries, cold and heat storage conversion, solar cells, solid state lighting, and advanced equipment. It carries out technical research in cutting-edge fields aiming for practical applications. It has signed cooperation agreements to build joint laboratories with a number of enterprises in the field of energy storage. It will provide important support for achieving the long-term goal of “electric China.”

Unveiling of three Centers

Centering on "One Facility and Two Centers", IOP Huairou Campus is both a significant base for future development of IOP and an important component of the Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics and the CAS Excellence Center in Condensed Matter Physics. On today’s event, the unveiling ceremonies for the two organizations and the Beijing Physics Science Instrument R&D Center were held as well, aiming to promote the development of the Campus with multiple resources.

Specifically, the Beijing Physics Science Instrument R&D Center was officially founded. This Center is co-founded by IOP and Huairou Science City to develop cutting-edge scientific instruments and equipment. Depending on the technical force of IOP and giving full play to technical advantages of CAS, the Center aims to collect and train a group of high-level technical talents. It focuses on the development of instruments concerning low-temperature equipment, vacuum equipment, ultra-fast laser, precision measurement, and high-throughput material preparation and characterization.

Supporting Huairou Science City to accelerate scientific and technological innovation

In 2020, the National Science and Technology Innovation Center has sped up its construction in all respects, including both the construction of the scientific facilities, and the development of the innovation ecology, advanced industrial modes, and new urban forms. The construction of urban service projects in transport, municipal services, housing, education, medical care and comprehensive services was also accelerated. The basic structure of the Huairou Science City and the National Science and Technology Innovation Center has formed.

The just-concluded fifth plenary session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China proposed that China shall uphold the central role of innovation in its modernization drive and strengthen its independence in science and technology. Prof. Wen Ya, IOP Party Secretary and Vice Director, said that the trial operation of "One Facility and Two Centers" on IOP Huairou Campus is a concrete measure to implement the national aim. By stimulating the innovation vitality of the talents and improving the system and mechanism of scientific and technological innovation, IOP will make more contributions to the construction of a strong country in science and technology.
