Prof. Changqing Jin Awarded the Bernd T. Matthias Prize
Date:02-03-2026 Print
Prof. Changqing Jin from the Institute of Physics (IOP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has been awarded the Bernd T. Matthias Prize - the top international award in the field of superconducting materials - in recognition of his series of groundbreaking discoveries. As the sole 2026 laureate worldwide, his achievement underscores China's significant contributions to international research on superconducting materials. Previously, Academician Zhongxian Zhao from IOP and Academician Xianhui Chen from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have also received this award.
The award recognizes Prof. Jin's groundbreaking discovery of numerous new superconductors through high-pressure synthesis and detection, including major advances in high-Tc cuprates such as Cu1234 and Ba2CuO4-y, the iron-pnictide LiFeAs, superhydrides such as CaH₆ with Tc above 200 K, record high-Tc elemental superconductors Ti and Sc, and pressure-induced superconductivity in the topological insulator Bi₂Te₃.
Created in 1989, the Bernd T. Matthias Prize is the top international award for innovative contributions to the material aspects of superconductivity, presented every three years to one to three scholars worldwide for outstanding contributions to the field. With rigorous selection criteria, past laureates include world-renowned scientists such as Hideo Hosono, Mikhail Eremets, Katsuya Shimizu, and Frank Steglich.
The award will be officially conferred at the International Conference on Materials and Mechanisms of Superconductivity (M²S -HTSC) to be held in Germany from July 19 to 25, 2026.
