摘要:Photosynthesis is the biological process that converts solar energy into chemical energy that is used by the organism to live, grow and multiply. At the basis of photosynthesis are two ultrafast processes: light harvesting by a photosynthetic light harvesting antenna followed by charge separation in the photosynthetic reaction center. Both processes occurs in dedicated pigment proteins that are organized in the photosynthetic membrane, in plants the thylakoid membrane. Upon excitation of a chlorophyll in the light harvesting antenna the energy is transferred on an ultrafast (femto- to picosecond) timescale to reach the reaction center where a transmembrane charge separation is initiated. The initial photosynthetic reactions occur with a quantum efficiency close to 1, meaning that every absorbed photon is used for photosynthesis. Recently it has become clear that quantum mechanics plays an essential role in both the light harvesting and charge separation events. Here I will explain how quantum mechanics is at the basis of successful light harvesting and charge separation. I will discuss how the quantum design of the photosynthetic light trap may be at the basis of new solar energy converting devices.
