Professor Masaki Azuma graduated from School of Science, Kyoto University in 1990 and presented his doctor defense in solid state chemistry in Kyoto in 1995 under supervision of Prof. Mikio Takano. Soon after finishing the doctor course, he received a permanent position at the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University and was promoted to be an associate professor in 2004. He moved to Laboratory for Materials and Structures, Tokyo Institute of Technology as a full professor in October, 2010. Now he is heading a research group at Kanagawa Institute of Industrial Science and Technology as well.

报告摘要：
Structural, electrical and magnetic properties of Bi, Pb-3d transition metal perovskite oxides stabilized by high-pressure synthesis at several GPa are discussed. Stereochemical 6s2 lone pairs of Bi3+ and Pb2+ induce polar distortions. 6s2 and 6s0 (Bi5+ and Pb4+) charge degree of freedom enables intermetallic charge transfer transition. These are coupled with magnetism of transition metals resulting in various functionalities. In particular, magnetization reversal by electric field and polarization rotation in BiFe1-xCoxO3, negative thermal expansion in modified BiNiO3 and PbVO3 and systematic charge distribution change in PbMO3 (M: 3d transition metal) are highlighted.
