2022 Autumn ShanghaiTech University-IOP Symposium for Young Scientists Held in Beijing and Shanghai

Date:29-08-2022 Print

The 2022 Autumn ShanghaiTech University-IOP Symposium for Young Scientists was successfully held in Beijing and Shanghai from August 27 to 28, 2022. The symposium was organized by the Key Laboratory of Extreme Conditions Physics of the Institute of Physics (IOP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and supported by the School of Physical Science and Technology of ShanghaiTech University. More than 130 scholars from ShanghaiTech University and IOP attended the symposium.

The symposium was chaired by Cheng Jinguang, Deputy Director of IOP. Zhang Fuchun, Academic Dean of the School of Physical Science and Technology of ShanghaiTech University, first delivered a welcome speech, saying that this forum was a rare opportunity for academic exchanges between the two institutions. Zhang Fuchun introduced the School of Physical Science and Technology and ShanghaiTech University to the participants, and welcomed the young scientists from IOP to visit and cooperate with ShanghaiTech University in the future. Finally, he wished the symposium a complete success. Then, Hu Jiangping, Deputy Director of IOP, delivered an opening speech to express his gratitude to researchers from ShanghaiTech University for their support for the symposium and share his hope to strengthen further exchanges, cooperation and mutual learning through the symposium. Hu Jiangping pointed out that the "Symposium for Young Scientists" is the most important platform for IOP to deepen academic exchanges among young researchers, and hoped that this tradition can be passed on to promote cooperation between IOP and other institutions in a more diversified way.

Zhang Fuchun and Cheng Jinguang presented the Science and Technology Rookie Award to Wu Fan and Wan Yuan of IOP, commending their important work in the research of core materials and devices of all-solid-state batteries; condensed matter theories, strongly correlated electronic systems and ultrafast condensed matter physics, respectively. Subsequently, Wu Fan made a report entitled "Research and Development Progress of Sulfide-based All-solid-state Battery Technology and Materials", and Wan Yuan made a report entitled "Theory of 2D Coherent Spectroscopy".

Prof. Guo Jiangang of IOP, under the invitation of the Editorial Office of Chinese Physics Letters (CPL), made a report entitled "Tunable superconductivity in V-based kagome lattice compound", and introduced the rapid development of CPL's Express Letters. CPL Invited Talk, which began in the fall of 2018, has been featured in IOP's Symposium for Young Scientists, aiming to encourage Chinese physicists, especially young physicists, to quickly publish their important original papers in CPL's Express Letters.

During the Symposium, 41 young researchers from IOP and ShanghaiTech University reported their latest research progress. The contents of the report were novel and rich, involving the basic science and related interdisciplinary fields of condensed matter physics and the frontier of applied technology. The participants also had warm and active discussions.

After the reports, Cen Cheng, Wang Yaxian, C.A.Palma, from IOP, and Liu Jianpeng, Pei Cuiying, from the School of Physical Science and Technology of ShanghaiTech University, won the "Best Report Award". Cheng Jinguang presented certificates to the five winners.

The successful holding of the Symposium provides an excellent academic exchange platform for young researchers from IOP and the School of Physical Science and Technology of ShanghaiTech University, and opportunities and assistance for further in-depth cooperation between the two sides.

Since the spring of 2005, the Symposium for Young Scientists has developed into one of the most influential branded events of IOP. Generally held twice a year (in spring and autumn), it is organized by IOP's Key Labs in turns. At the same time, young scholars from universities and research institutes around the symposium venue are invited to present their latest research progress, in order to build a platform for cooperation and exchanges, and create a good academic atmosphere in IOP.
