Topological phase transition versus quantum phase transition

Abstract:

A quantum phase transition (QPT) is the one where the ground state energy at $ T=0 $ suffers a dis-continuous change or non-analyticity. A topological phase transition (TPT) is the one where the ground state at $ T=0 $ suffers a change in its topological invariant.It was well known that a QPT may not be a TPT. It is a also common believe that a TPT must be a QPT. Here we find a first example which violates such a believe: a TPT which is not a QPT in the Quantum Anomalous Hall ( QAH ) system under an injecting current. We also study the edge states in a strip geometry under a longitudinal (L-) and transverse (T-) current and discover the enriched bulk/L-edge/T-edge correspondences across such a novel TPT which is not a QPT. Experimental detections of these novel bulk and edge phenomena are discussed.

Prof. Ye received his Ph.D. from Yale University. Now he is a Professor at Mississippi state university. Currently, he is a visiting professor at the newly found Great Bay university in Dongguan, Guangdong, China. He is a condensed matter theorist working on the interdisciplinary field of condensed matter, quantum optics, cold atoms, non-relativistic quantum field theory, Turbulence and conformal field theory. Recently, he has been particularly interested to explore possible deep connections among quantum/topological phases, Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models and quantum black holes from material's point of views.
