Abstract:
Directed Brownian transport (ratcheting) in narrow asymmetric channels of various geometries is sustained by time-dependent external biases, including periodic drives and other time correlated energy sources.
We discuss the design of high-efficiency autonomous ratchets for active (or self-propelling) Brownian particles of different geometry, by having recourse to tailored activation patterns, shearing and collective effects.

A former graduate of the University of Pisa (Italy, 1983), he specialized in diverse topics of nonequilibrium statistical physics including stochastic processes, stochastic resonance, Brownian motors, physical acoustics and soliton statistics. He is co-founder of the VIRGO project, the French-Italian collaboration for the interferometric detection of gravitational waves; he is an affiliated scientist of RIKEN (Japan), KIAS (South Korea) and TONGJI University (Shanghai, China) as an expert in biology inspired nano-technology.
Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS, 2003), of the Institute of Physics (IoP, 2004) and of the American Association for Advancement of Science, (AAAS, 2008), he has been named RIKEN Eminent Scientist (2002) and Honorary Professor at the University of Loughborough (UK, 2007). In 2006, he won the von Humboldt prize (Germany), in 2008 received a Knighthood from the President of Italy for his scientific achievements, and in 2011 has been elected member of the European Academy. As a member of the Ligo-Virgo collaboration,he shared the Special Breakthrough Prize and the Gruber Prize in cosmology of year 2016.
The author is presently professor of physics at the University of Camerino, Foreign Expert of the Chinese Government and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tongji University (Shanghai, China, 2016-2018), and Director of the Int’l School of Statistical Physics at the E.
