Abstract:

Long-wavelength fluctuations destroy the long-range translational order of two-dimensional solids at finite temperatures. They also influence the dynamics of amorphous solids and supercooled liquids in two dimensions, leading to the divergence of the vibrational amplitude with the system size. In this talk, I will present that these long-wavelength fluctuations also affect the dynamics of two-dimensional systems in their normal liquid regime, e.g., inducing an unusual but ubiquitous decoupling between diffusion coefficient D and structural relaxation time τ, where D ∝ τ-κ, with κ > 1. These results suggest that long-wavelength fluctuations make 2- and 3-dimensional molecular systems behave differently from high to very low temperatures.

Brief CV of Dr. Yanwei Li:

Yanwei received his PhD in polymer physics from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Then he joined Nanyang Technological University as a PostDoc fellow. His interest covers fundamental problems and systems in soft matter, such as glass, supercooled liquid, melting and biological tissues.
