Ion stopping in warm dense matter

Ion stopping in warm dense matter is a process of fundamental importance for the understanding of the properties of dense plasmas, the realization and the interpretation of experiments involving ion-beam-heated warm dense matter samples, and for inertial confinement fusion research. The theoretical description of the ion stopping power in warm dense matter is difficult notably due to electron coupling and degeneracy, and measurements are still largely missing. In particular, the low-velocity stopping range, that features the largest modelling uncertainties, remains virtually unexplored. Here, we report proton energy-loss measurements in warm dense plasma at low projectile velocities. Our energy-loss data, combined with a precise target characterization based on plasma-emission measurements using two independent spectroscopy diagnostics, demonstrate a significant deviation of the stopping power from classical models in this regime. In particular, we show that our results are in closest agreement with recent first-principles simulations based on time-dependent density functional theory.


Dimitri Batani is Professor of “Exceptional class” at the University of Bordeaux, working at CELIA laboratory (Centre Lasers Intenses et Applications).He got his M.Sc. at Milan University and his Ph.D. in Physics at Pisa University in Italy. His research activity concerns the physics of laser-plasma interaction, inertial confinement fusion, and physics of matter in extreme conditions. He coordinates the European activity on the Shock Ignition approach to direct drive inertial fusion.He is Fellow of the European Physical Society (EPS), Member of Institute Universitaire de France (IUF): French service of the Ministry of Higher Education that distinguishes each year a small number of university professors for their research excellence, as evidenced by their international recognition), and Member of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC). In 2018 he got the Friedel-Volterra Prize jointly awarded by the Italian Physical Society (SIF) and the French Physical Society (SFPh) “For the outstanding contributions in laser plasma interaction related to inertial confinement fusion”. He published about 400 scientific papers with more than 9000 citations.
