Spectroscopy identification of an obstructed atomic phase in NbSe2

Among the various tools available in condensed matter physics, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) holds a special place due to its ability to provide direct access to the local spectral function of quantum systems. In this talk, I will demonstrate how STM enabled the unambiguous identification of an obstructed atomic insulator (OAI) phase in NbSe2. Unlike a trivial atomic insulator, an OAI has its Wannier center of the bands, or the center of charge, localized not on atoms but at empty sites within the unit cell. By analyzing the STM spectra of NbSe2, we can directly extract the correlation functions between different orbitals and infer the presence of an OAI phase.

报告人简介:

Dr. Yi Jiang received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 2023, and then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Donostia International Physics Center. His research centers on the computational and theoretical study of condensed matter physics, with a particular emphasis on the topological, magnetic, and superconducting properties of exotic quantum systems.
